Wet vs. Dry Polishing Pads, Explained

Almost every polishing job comes down to an early fork: run the pads wet or run them dry. It sounds like a small choice, but it drives your tool selection, your consumable cost, your dust control, and the finish you can hit. This guide walks through the real trade-offs so you can match the pad to the work instead of the other way around.

The core difference

A diamond polishing pad grinds stone by dragging fine diamond particles across the surface at speed. That generates heat and dust. The difference between wet and dry is simply how you deal with those two by-products.

Wet pads run with a water feed. The water cools the diamond and the stone, flushes away the slurry of removed material, and keeps the cutting face clean. That cooling lets the pad work hard and last a long time. The trade-off is mess: you need a water source, the runoff has to go somewhere, and you are working around a wet surface.

Dry pads run with no water. They are built to shed heat and dust on their own, which usually means a more open structure and a resin makeup tuned to run cooler. You get convenience and portability — no hoses, no slurry — but the pad and the workpiece run hotter, pads tend to wear faster, and the process throws fine dust into the air. Many pads sold today are labeled wet or dry, meaning they can run either way, but even those usually perform best in one mode.

Wet polishing exists in large part because it keeps that dust out of the air.
